Bowman targets summer 2015 BBQ season

Global food coatings specialist Bowman Ingredients is already preparing to fire up the nation’s tastebuds in Summer 2015.

Researchers and food technologists at Bowman Ingredients’ UK headquarters are currently cooking up fresh ideas for BBQ food coatings that will be hot favourites with British consumers next summer. Working more than a year in advance of final product launches, the New Product Development (NPD) team is busy developing coatings that will drive the BBQ category forward in 2015.

According to Bowman Ingredients, the most influential culinary trend in the 2014 British BBQ category is regional flavours from the United States. This year has seen major retailers introduce meat products with bold flavours – sweet, spicy, smoked, tomato – from southern US states such as Louisiana, South Carolina, Texas, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Bowman Ingredients Sales Director Richard Easey says: “For Bowman Ingredients the BBQ coatings category is all about infusing meat with marinades and glazes to give big, full-on flavours. This year’s trend for pork, beef, lamb and poultry infused with regional US flavours transferred to food retail from the restaurant industry.”

He adds: “Over the past couple of years we have seen the rise of US-style BBQ restaurants, grills and smokehouses in London and other UK cities. It is our job to look for trends in food service to help drive new product development for the food retail industry.”

As well as identifying flavour trends in the food service sector, Bowman Ingredients’ NPD team attends international food trade events to gain market insight and spark ideas for innovative new BBQ coatings. The company then works in partnership with leading food solutions suppliers and processors to develop products for supermarkets and quick service restaurant chains.

Bowman Ingredients is confident that the current culinary trend for US-style BBQ flavours will continue in Summer 2015. The NPD team is also predicting the introduction of new flavours and seasonings, driven by a demand from British consumers for more adventurous BBQ meals.

British consumers are more willing to try new flavours and there is a growing trend towards spicier taste palates.”

He adds: “This year has seen continued growth in the street food category with a marked rise in the number of Vietnamese and Korean food outlets established in the UK. British consumers are becoming more adventurous and are looking for ways to add hotter, spicier flavours to meals. We’re predicting that 2015 will see some fiery flavour trends from the international street food scene translate into new coatings products for the retail and QSR sector.”
